Como cada año y a mediados de septiembre se realiza la entrega del premio EMMY a lo mejor de la televisión en su modalidad de 'primetime', es decir es su horario estelar. La Academia de Televisión, Artes y Ciencia de Estados Unidos es la encargada de dar dicho premio
y con esto se abre oficialmente las nuevas temporadas en la televisión en cuanto a series o miniseries se refiere.
Este año se rompe la hegemonía que venía ejerciendo la cadena HBO y es vencida por la cadena SHOWTIME, aún así en el renglón de premios técnicos y artísticos la ganadora fue HBO. En cuanto series la gran perdedora de la noche fue ni más ni menos que "Mad Men", la triunfadora en entregas de premios pasados en este año de 17 nominaciones que tenía no se llevó ni uno solo. Duro golpe para la cadena AMC que esperaba que su serie insignia ganara en las principales categorías.
Las grandes ganadoras fueron "Homeland" y "Modern Family" que acapararon los premios más importantes en series de Drama y Comedia respectivamente, y "Games of Thrones" fue la ganadora en las categorías técnicas y artísticas.
